Hello all,
Just wondering if anyone here has seen Horslips live? If you want to share some stories and memories of those gigs back in the 70s, please do, hopefully this forum won't die in the same way that the site did (somewhat mysteriously?)
Sadly I'm too young to have witnessed Horslips playing in the prime of their youth, and am naturally trying to steal stories off others to piece together my own memories of Horslips! ;D

well-you have to remember in the early 70's it was really exciting and unusual to see anything other than a showband performing in a venue bigger than a pub so it is hard to appreciate at this remove just how mind-blowing it was to see a live rock band, performing their own material(plus a couple of carefully chosen covers), with a proper sound system and light show and dreesed like the 'lips were. and they kept coming back and playing too despite having been on tv and in the NME, and touring england and europe and america etc so they were even more glamourous. my favourite personal memory is as a 16 year old-thumbing to see them in monaghan and getting there early and being let in by a sympathetic roadie and getting to hear them rehearse new stuff (it was just book of invasions) for about half an hour. it was like my own private little gig.

there should have been an exclamation mark after 'book of invasions' there, in case you think i was being blase. i mean-they wererehearsing new material and it was only book of invasions!eh? not bad.

Sorry for huge delay in reply!!! Best memories are that we had nothing like it at the time. Other alternatives were showbands and cover bands. The dancehalls used to go wild for horslips. Best memories are the actual gigs and partying with the guys after. They were always part of the WHOLE thing, never just cleared off after a gig. I've seen hundreds of bands but nothing beats the Lips experience.

Anything unusual happen? Why certainly. During a gig in Donegal the IRA robbed the cash office and yours truly actually slept through the whole affair. I only heard afterwards that it had been an extra exciting night. Pat Maguire (soundman) has a photo of me dozing during the gig. I know...I deserve to be flogged for sleeping through a Lipsos gig but I was playing myself in those days, also holding down a day job and travelling with the boys whenever I could. There's only so much excitement a poor boy can take at that tender age!!

Hey Musicman, any chance of having a copy please ? Or any other live stuff you might have ? I've only got two live recordings, Radio 1 In Concert from Feb 79 & The Bottom Line from Nov 79. Gladly do a trade.
